You’ve decided you’d like a new career direction, be it because you’re currently unemployed; finding your current role unfulfilling; failing to make any career progression; lacking motivation; or thinking about setting up your own business. The array of career directions you could choose to pursue are numberless; even if you know you’d like to be an entrepreneur, there are still decisions to be made about what type of business you’d like to run.

So who decides ‘what next’? Who decides which direction you’re going to go in? Your old university careers advisor? A recruitment consultant? A fortune teller? Here at Position Ignition, we believe that only you can make the decision if you truly want to take control of your life. Whether it’s a slight shift in career direction or a total about-face, it’s up to you to decide ‘what next’? It is you who must ultimately decide the one career direction you’re going to try next. Why only one direction at a time? Isn’t it better you hedge your bets by pursuing several different avenues at the same time? The truth is, if you try to focus on too many options and ideas at once, you won’t end up truly focusing on any of them and your chances of successfully changing direction will decrease dramatically. If you really want a shift in direction to lead to career progression or increased professional contentment, you must narrow down your options and then choose the one angle that’s best for you at this present time. We are dedicated to helping people adopt a focused approach and narrow down their choices; from what our clients have told us, this is an effective, proven way of finding a new career direction.

Even though it’s up to you to make the decisions and take control of your career, it is important to include your partner and your family in your decision. After all, they are a significant part of your daily life and are directly affected by your day-to-day work. They can’t, however, make the final decision for you. Getting the balance right between involving them and retaining control can be tricky and that’s why we offer support and advice not just to individuals, but also to couples and family units. Together we can move you towards deciding what next, and that decision will still be yours and yours alone.

A business to be successful needs to have a good foundation. One solid foundation is by having a good laid out business plan. Knowing how to write a business plan can be a good way to start a business. But this doesn’t mean that if you do not know how to write one you are going to fail.

There are lots of business plan templates available today online. There are specialized sites that provide new business organizations templates that can help them structure a successful business plan. This will eliminate the need to fully know how to write a business plan. All you have to do is follow a sort of map of what is needed. A template is just like a fill up the blanks questionnaire.

But why do we actually need a business plan?A business plan can help your business in many ways. It can help a business be on track. When a business has a set of goals that it needs to achieve with a specific time frame. Everything on a business will seem to flow and will have a sort of structure.

Knowing how to write a business can have added benefits to a business organization. When one has this skill, you can customize you own business plan. You will be able to put your needs specifically for your organizations situation and current state.

Nevertheless, because of business plan templates, people can have the least skill in writing a business plan and still have a success and effective business plan at hand.

When you do find a template that can replace the skill of knowing how to write a business template then everything is set. Just be sure that the template you need is the one for your business. This is because not all templates can be used on all types of business. Sometimes you even have to get two or more templates and combine them to be able to have the perfect business plan template for you.

In this day and age, it is okay not to have certain skills that are necessarily needed years and years ago. Knowing how to write a business plan can be replaced by having a good site that provides good business plan templates. In fact, these templates are even better because they are tested and proven.

When developing an innovation strategy, it is important to discuss ways to innovate internal business procedures. Spend time brainstorming on the various steps in your internal business procedures and look for ways to simplify or eliminate steps to streamline those procedures.

However, before getting to the issue of innovating a business procedure, there’s a critical preliminary question: Is the procedure necessary?

I recently worked with a company that performs repair services on electronic appliances. The company had a detailed “inventory procedure” that was completed every morning before the store opened. The procedure required an employee to print a report of all “open” repair orders from the computer. Then, the employee handling the inventory procedure that morning checked to be sure that every appliance in for repair was actually in the store. The employee manually checked off each appliance on the list. This process took over an hour each morning, and the employees hated it. When I began asking questions about the procedure, I learned that the completed checklist was filed away and never used again. And, if they could not find an appliance shown on the printed list, a notation was made on the list, but no effort was made to determine what happened to the missing appliance. When I asked why they did this, the answer was “that procedure is required in our business policies and procedures”. After discussing the procedure with several people, including store managers, I learned that there was no reason to continue that daily procedure.

There’s no bigger waste of time and resources than making an effort to optimize a business procedure that does not need to be performed in the first place.

Take a look at your own internal business procedures and be sure there is a valid business reason for continuing those procedures. If the procedure is necessary, then you can begin looking for ways to streamline that procedure.

There’s a common misconception that innovation is just for large companies. However, identifying and developing creative ideas can benefit companies of all sizes – including small businesses that are just getting started. Don’t wait until your business grows to a particular size to begin developing an innovation strategy – you may miss some great opportunities.

You don’t need a Research & Development Department or an Engineering Staff to take advantage of creative thinking in your business. In fact, many small businesses can bring creative ideas to market faster than large corporations because of their smaller size. Take advantage of the flexibility available to small companies and start the innovation process today. Here’s all you need to start leveraging innovative ideas:

1. At least one person willing to spend some time doing “creative thinking”.

2. At least one “seed” idea. This “seed” can be a problem or unmet need in your industry or in your own business. Creative thinking exercises can start with seed ideas to develop potential solutions to these problems or unmet needs.

3. A way to record the creative ideas (paper/pencil, computer, audio recorder or a white board) – even a napkin and a crayon works (I have done this myself several times in restaurants). If you use a white board, be sure to take a picture of the board before it’s erased or record the ideas using paper or a computer.

4. A system to evaluate creative ideas. I have found that a small group of 4-6 people works well for evaluating creative ideas and refining those ideas into products or services that can be implemented in a business.

This is all you need to get started. You can add more steps and activities as your innovation strategy develops – but keep things simple in the beginning.

Business process management (BPM) is a systematic approach to making an organization’s workflow more effective, more efficient and more capable of adapting to an ever-changing environment. BPM is a management approach focused on aligning all aspects of an organization with the wants and needs of clients. It is a holistic management approach that promotes business effectiveness and efficiency while striving for innovation, flexibility, and integration with technology. Business process management attempts to improve processes continuously. It could therefore be described as a “process optimization process.”

The goal of BPM is to reduce human error and miscommunication and focus stakeholders on the requirements of their roles. BPM is a subset of infrastructure management, an administrative area concerned with maintaining and optimizing an organization’s equipment and core operations.Business process management activities can be grouped into five categories: design, modeling, execution, monitoring, and optimization.

1) Design

2) Modeling

3) Execution

4) Monitoring

5) Optimization

Design:

Process Design encompasses both the identification of existing processes and the design of “to-be” processes. Areas of focus include representation of the process flow, the actors within it, alerts & notifications, escalations, Standard Operating Procedures, Service Level Agreements, and task hand-over mechanisms.

Modeling:

Modeling takes the theoretical design and introduces combinations of variables e.g., changes in rent or materials costs, which determine how the process might operate under different circumstances.

Execution:

One of the ways to automate processes is to develop or purchase an application that executes the required steps of the process; however, in practice, these applications rarely execute all the steps of the process accurately or completely. Another approach is to use a combination of software and human intervention; however this approach is more complex, making the documentation process difficult.

Monitoring:

Monitoring encompasses the tracking of individual processes, so that information on their state can be easily seen, and statistics on the performance of one or more processes can be provided. An example of the tracking is being able to determine the state of a customer order (e.g. ordered arrived, awaiting delivery, invoice paid) so that problems in its operation can be identified and corrected.

Optimization:

Process optimization includes retrieving process performance information from modeling or monitoring phase; identifying the potential or actual bottlenecks and the potential opportunities for cost savings or other improvements; and then, applying those enhancements in the design of the process. Overall, this creates greater business value.
